Las Pizarras Pinot Noir 2015 (99p James Suckling)

Climate
Aconcagua Valley is characterized by its Mediterranean Climate with low yearly rainfall, mild wet winters and dry summers. Aconcagua Costa Estate has cool climate growing conditions given its proximity to the Pacific Ocean (only 12 Kms) and its cooling influence. The Humboldt currents brings cool air from the South Pole, and the position of the Aconcagua River , perpendicular to the Pacific Coast allows sea air to flow along the valley. Cool climate conditions make this estate ideal for cool climate grapes including Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, as well as Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc.

Terroir
Vines in the Aconcagua Costa Estate are planted between 75 and 230 mts in altitude, with most of the plots from 100 to 200 mts. Icon plots lie above the average, Pinot from 95 to 220mts, Chardonnay from 110 to 140 mts.
Wide range of slopes and rolling hills are found in the Aconcagua Costa estate due to the hilly morphology. Slope angle affects drainage, water storage, soil development, and viticultural practices. Plot exposure directly affects exposure to sunlight and therefore temperature, thus influencing the choice of grape variety.
The valley Axis constrains the exposure of the plots, those located on the left bank of the river are dominantly exposed to N, NE and NW. The relief in the right bank is more incised with no clear trend in exposure. Metamorphic rocks with high concentration of slate (pizarras in Spanish). Thin layer of loamy texture on a base of clay and metamorphic rocks.
- Chardonnay plots face South, South East and East.
- Pinot Noir exhibits great diversity, facing mostly West, but ranging from South to North.
