Ferreira Quinta do Porto Vintage 2015, Douro, Portugal
2015 was a dry year for the majority of the vegetative cycle, with March receiving roughly 50% less rainfall than usual. Temperatures were higher than normal in April and May, three subsequent heatwaves in June and July - where temperatures exceeded 40ºC. These conditions led to a delay in the growth cycle of around 1-2 weeks. In September, the recorded levels of rainfall were above the norm.
The exceptional wines selected for this final blend were transported to Ferreira's wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia where they matured in ideal conditions, in terms of temperature and humidity, in oak barrels characteristic of the Ferreira brand. The wines' evolution was constantly monitored by the winemaking team, multiple tests and analysis confirming the calibre of those used in the final blend.
Vinified using selected grapes from the plots of Quinta do Porto. The grapes are selected in the vineyard and again on arrival at the winery. Soft-crushing and destemming are followed by soft maceration in traditional granite lagares. During this period, the temperature of fermentation and density are monitored, in order to identify the right time to add the wine spirit. This moment depends on each grape variety, maturation levels and the desired sweetness.
51% Touriga Nacional, 28% Touriga Franca, 13% Vinha Velha, 6% Tinta Roriz, 2% Sousão
Geur & Smaak
An almost opaque, deep red colour. An aroma of excellent intensity and complexity, with notes of red fruit and chocolate coming courtesy of good maturation. Additional complex balsamic aromas of resin, pine and tobacco box complement subtle shrubby tones. On the palate, it has excellent volume, firm-but-silky tannins, and a well-integrated acidity, with notes of black fruit combining with a resinous quality. A long and very elegant finish.
Over the years, a natural sediment may form in the bottle and this wine should therefore be opened carefully and preferably decanted. This wine surprises and will benefit from being opened some time prior to consumption. Serve at 16ºC-18ºC. Thanks to its elegance and complexity, it makes a perfect match for chocolates and intense cheeses.
