BOLGHERI - CA’ MARCANDA
Following the exceptional quality of 2015, another excellent vintage such as 2016 highlights the great potential of this area once again. Both winter and spring 2016 were marked by abundant and frequent rainfall, thus creating the ideal water supply for the entire growing season, followed by a warm and dry summer. Few rainfalls during the harvest (250 mm of rain from August 1st to October1st) were optimal conditions to reach the full ripeness. Strong diurnal temperature exchanges during the ripening period, with peaks of 12-15°C, allowed a slow and even maturation of the grapes. Avoiding the trimming of the shoots and bending them to the highest wires of the trellis system, the vines reduced the over production of leaves, thus leading to an overall balanced concentration of the sugar in the grapes. Due to the peculiar dryness of the season, the presence of diseases in the vineyard was minimal, allowing the harvest of extremely healthy grapes. The 2016 vintage was “generous”, balanced and the production was abundant. Thanks to the warmer temperature at the beginning of the harvest, Merlot reached the full ripeness and concentration; while the rainfall in September allowed to enhance the elegance of Syrah, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The harvest started on August 24th with Viognier and finished on September 29th with Cabernet grapes. Overall, 2016 is a vintage of precision, identity and energy. The wines show great structure, deep colour, fruity and flowery aromas and flavours.
2015 and 2016 Camarcanda vintages clearly show the great potential that our land in Bolgheri has got, these vintages are the best expressions of Camarcanda label so far. Silky texture and a pleasant hint of sweetness are the features of the 2016 vintage showing drinkability and juiciness.
Climate and harvest
Abundant and frequent rainfalls, thus creating the ideal water supply for the entire growing season, marked both 2016 winter and spring. The summer turned out to be particularly warm and dry, but strong diurnal temperature exchanges during the ripening period with picks of 12-15 °C have been really helpful. The vines stood very well the dry season, thanks to a rainy spring and more importantly to the accurate soil management and mulching. Moreover, few rainfalls in September (250 mm of rain from August 1st to October1st) allowed to enhanced the elegance of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Due to the dry weather, the presence of diseases in the vineyard was minimal and we could harvest extremely healthy grapes. Overall, 2016 vintage was “generous” and well balanced. A long and steady spontaneous fermentation provided great structure, deep colour, fruity and flowery aromas and flavours.
Grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc
The two varieties ferment and macerate separately for around 15 days. After 12 months of ageing in oak and further 6 months in concrete vessels, they are blended and aged for several months in the bottle before being released.
Just as in the previous vintage the proportion of Cab Sauvignon is definitely relevant in 2016 blend, due to its aptitude to express itself by amazing characteristics in warmer vintages. 2016 Camarcanda shows red ripe fruits on the nose, with hints of bergamot and strawberry (typical notes from Cabernet Franc). The bouquet is embracing and persistent as well. It has a juicy and complex palate with aromas of Mediterranean bushes and berries. The high flavor concentration is well balanced with an engaging acidity. This wine shows a long aftertaste and firm but refined tannins. Interesting is its ongoing evolution in the glass.
